Civil engineering involves the design and maintenance of infrastructure. Be it in building roads, buildings, railways, or in constructing water and power facilities, civil engineers have an important part to play.

Here are short descriptions of some of the Civil Engineering Modules that you will take in NUS:

1) CE1109: Statics and Mechanics of Materials

This module introduces students to the fundamental concepts of statics and mechanics of materials and their applications to engineering problems. Among other things, students will learn the mechanism behind cable and truss bridges, and have a try at designing their very own bridges in their groups!

2)CE2409: Computer Applications in Civil Engineering

The module is split into two parts. In the first part of the module, students will design their own elaborate 3D structures (eg. a floating platform on MBS or their dream house) using Microstation. In the second part of the module, students are introduced to basic programming with Fortran.

3) CE2155: Structural Mechanics and Materials

This module equips students with knowledge and skills in structural mechanics, and concrete and steel as structural materials. Students will learn about concrete composition and how portland cement is made. During lab lessons, they have a hands-on try at making their own concrete blocks and beams to carry loads of at least 300kg!

For more Year 1 Civil Engineers, all your modules in Semester 1 are pre-allocated to you. However, if you wish to drag or drop modules, you can do so via the Centralised Online Registration System (CORS). To get more information on your modules, head to NUSMods (https://nusmods.com/). There is also a tab there that also allows you to design your timetable easily (highly recommended).
